Local River Swimming @ Castelvecchio Pascoli Train Station - Park at the small station and walk down the slope and through the woods - We recommend "tuna shoes" & a tube for going down the weir!

Take a walk around Eglio and Sassi Villages - This is an old Lavatoio used for washing many years ago. Sassi also has a bar & pizzeria "Il Totto"

The bridge at Borgo a Mozzano, called "The Devil's Bridge" or the "Maddalena Bridge"

Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy’s Tuscany region. It’s known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is 15 minutes from Eglio. Beautiful town; there is a local market on a Thursday through the local streets.

Another place to visit en route to Lucca for a great pastry and coffee served with an amazing local smile is Pasticceria Guidi in Via Salvatore Quasimodo, 26, 55023 Diecimo - next to the Q8 garage on the main road from Gallicano to Lucca.

Further afield... Pisa, Florence and Cinque Terre!

For something to do further afield there are beaches within 1hr10min (Viareggio and Livorno) as well as Pisa 1hr10min away. Florence is 2 hours from Eglio - be sure to visit the food market!

Our best recommendation is Cinque Terre - 5 fishing villages attached to the rock face of the ligurian coast! From Eglio, the easiest way is to drive through the mountain past Castelnuovo di Garfagnana to Massa Centro Train Station - free parking to the left of the station; drive in to the station and past drop off and as if you are driving away with the train line parallel to you on your right - you will reach the free parking. This takes just over an hour; from there use the "trenitalia" train app to get the train to the start of the Cinque Terre which is Riomaggiore around 30 minutes from Massa Centro. Monterosso al Mare - The last stop on the Cinque Terre - walk through the tunnel to the old town. Beautiful beaches and great for swimming!
